Getting to know Chip…

Inspired design for me finds its roots in Design Thinking. It is about taking a human-centered approach and focusing on the users we are designing for in order to create the best environment and experience within the given project constraints.

I am inspired by the way the natural and built environments solve problems. For example, the way tree branches form a canopy that catches the optimum amount of sunlight and its relationship to heavy timber trusses that create a structure for a canopy of protection.

I have a passion for growing plants, especially Bonsai. We currently have over 50 trees in training. The slow steady process of raising and caring for living art has taught me patience and restraint. Manipulating a tree to achieve a long-term vision while also respecting the flexibility of the tree is akin to working within a design project’s constraints. Training a bonsai is a long-term project with many revisions, which is quite similar to responding to a stakeholder’s feedback in a design review.
