Summary

Friendship Village, a continuing care retirement community in Schaumburg, Illinois recognized how important state-of-the-art dining venues are—and would continue to be—for residents. The multi-phased dining venue transformation began with the conversion of a three-meal-a-day, buffet style venue into a chic new restaurant called Mosaic. It also included an adjacent Teaching Kitchen which offers creative, culinary hands-on learning experiences for residents, families and prospects.

Before

Inspired Design

Existing building conditions, while typically considered a major project challenge, can also be viewed as a source of inspiration and an opportunity for creative problem solving. In this case, applying the vibrant dining program concept to an aging building with many unusual architectural features required great vision. Since the original architectural style was so dominant, the design team wisely chose to work within the overall volumes and design vocabulary but were still able to totally transform this building into new dynamic and hospitality-oriented dining venues.

Style

The design promotes a new way of life at Friendship Village. The dining area is no longer just a place where you go to eat—but a part of the social fabric of the community. It gives people an opportunity to meet, connect, socialize, nurture relationships and gather. The plan maintains an open appeal while still providing distinct destinations. The modern environment uses architectural details to offer connections between spaces as well as glimpses into different areas to support a sense of discovery.

Materials

The materials palette combines rich wood tones with metal and tile details, a combination of warm and cool finishes that reinforce the dynamic, modern dining program. Screen walls, tile patterns, sliding door panels with decorative glass and wood feature walls provide focal points and artistic accents in each dining destination.
