Summary

Charming Square, a ten-story retirement community in the heart of Tokyo, demonstrates MDP’s commitment to serving the global senior living marketplace. The project, consisting of 129-luxury apartments, 23-assisted living apartments, eight dementia care units and a Commons area, launched MDP International—a division of MDP.

Inspired Design

The overall aesthetic was inspired by the desire to incorporate Western design practices with traditional Japanese design details and principles. The Western influence further inspired the programming for Dementia Care. The MDP Team introduced a new physical layout for the unit and implemented design features typically used in the United States, such as visual queuing and wayfinding techniques, in order to maximize resident dignity and independence while maintaining safety and control.

Style

The fusion of Western and Japanese design philosophies was infused with a hospitality appeal to bring to life the amenity spaces in the Commons area—including an entrance hall, Five-Star restaurant, karaoke rooms, game rooms, a mah-jongg room, theater, art center, library, beauty salon, communal bathing, athletic gym, wellness center and rehabilitation areas.

Materials

Rich woods tones and clean-lined millwork were complemented by elegant marble and tile details in flooring and accents. East truly meets West in the selection and application of materials—creating unique and enticing amenity destinations.
