Summary
Vantage Point, a high-rise Continuing Care Retirement Community established in the mid-1980’s, was in need of a repositioning. This not-for-profit organization wanted to enhance life for existing residents and staff while improving marketability to the next generation of seniors in the Baltimore and Washington area. Architecture, design and programming come together to position Vantage House for the future, addressing all aspects of the resident experience—body, mind and spirit.
Inspired Design
Project challenges can provide the greatest source of inspiration. The site constraints of Vantage House and dated interior inspired creative space planning and an energized palette. From filling in areas beneath building overhangs, creating a Memory Care Household on the fifth floor and reworking space for enhanced amenities to updating the interior with modern detailing, MDP’s Inspired Design provides a refreshed, engaging environment—a welcoming community.
Before
Style
Designed to serve the “GI Generation,” Vantage Point exhibited the environmental and programmatic “trappings” of that era. It was cosmetically renovated in the late 90’s to appeal to a changing marketplace and to incorporate assisted living within the nursing tower. The design team was challenged to create a fresh take on an urban building that is part of the Columbia Town Center.
Materials
A sophisticated palette was developed with a combination of walnut woods, metals and other specialty materials. The color schemes are rich in color saturation in most of the IL commons areas. The new Memory Support areas offer a more nuanced and subtle style.
“As a Columbia and a Town Center resident, I knew I did not want to leave Columbia when it was time to plan for our later years. Vantage Point offered me the opportunity to age in place right next door. It has turned out to be a wonderful decision.”
